Establishment of Protect Severance Scheme No 2

June 09, 2017

From 1 July 2017, Protect will undergo a restructure which will see the introduction of a new approved worker entitlement fund, Protect Severance Scheme No 2 Pty Ltd as trustee for Protect Severance Scheme No 2 (Protect No 2). The new fund rules will be the same as Protect’s existing fund, Elecnet (Aust) Pty Ltd as trustee for Protect Severance Scheme (Protect No1), operated and managed by the existing Board of Directors, and have the same sponsors, employer and union representatives.

In order to avoid financial jargon, we wanted to keep the message clear and simple for our members – while the ABN may change, Protect members can be assured that this will not impact your entitlements; you will still have one Protect account with one statement and one account balance.

All new members who join Protect from the 1st July onward will come under Protect No 2 and all employer contributions after this date will be to Protect No 2.
When the time comes for members to lodge a claim, the payout will be a combined from both Protect No 1 and Protect No 2.

In case of any questions on this, please call Protect on 1300 344 249.

Vale Alex McCallum

May 26, 2017

The Board and staff of Protect are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of former CEO Alex McCallum on May 24. Alex led Protect from October 2009 until his recent retirement in April 2017, steering the Fund out of the turbulent times of the GFC.

Alex oversaw the transition of Protect from outsourced administration to the in-house team we have today. As a result all current staff were employed by Alex.

Alex championed Protect's support and sponsorship of Disability Sport & Recreation and greatly helped educate the Protect community to understand and appreciate the work of this organisation.

Our thoughts are with Alex's family, including his wife Mary Ann, a friend to many of our staff.

Our condolences also go out to the many industry contacts who worked with Alex, particularly those in the ETU and NECA who in some cases knew Alex for decades.

Protect Severance Fund Appoints New Chief Executive Officer

February 16, 2017

Protect has announced the departure in April of Chief Executive Officer and Company Secretary, Alex McCallum. From his appointment in October 2009, Alex has brought a wealth of leadership, administrative, training and industrial experience to the company. He will be retiring from the workforce after 48 years, having first entered as an apprentice electrician in 1968.

“It has been a great privilege to lead Protect for the past 8 years, commencing in the tumultuous period that was the Global Financial Crisis” Alex said. Since then “the fund has grown, diversified and restructured its administration to become a highly professional organisation which operates nationally”.

Under Alex’s leadership, Protect has expanded from a secretariat of three to a team of 22 including in-house administration, operations support, finance, field staff and IT management. It is now the most dynamic redundancy fund in Australia.

Following Alex’s retirement, Protect will welcome new Chief Executive Officer, Michael Connolly. Michael joins Protect after almost 14 years in senior management with CoINVEST Limited as Company Secretary and Manager Corporate.

Having overseen governance, strategic planning and the IT needs at CoINVEST, Michael will carry Protect into its third phase of development, bringing new skills and vision to the organisation. Prior to CoINVEST, Michael has held roles in finance and strategy with one of Australia’s largest international food manufacturers as well as roles in the investment, management, consulting and accounting sectors.

“I’m really pleased to continue servicing a similar base, providing a valuable service to workers and employers” said Michael. “As a business trusted to manage industry funds, I’ll be focused on ensuring Protect’s governance approach is of the highest standard as well as taking a fresh look at how we can incrementally improve our services to our members”.

With his departure on 28 April imminent, Alex would like to acknowledge the staff at Protect for their important contribution to the success of the organisation over the past years and wishes the Sponsors, the Board, employers, workers and service providers well for the future.
