Board - Protect: Severance and Income Protection benefits

During the difficult economic conditions of recent years, more Protect members than ever before have welcomed the financial safety net provided by Protect severance and Protect personal injury and illness insurance.

The Protect Board is committed to pursuing a wide range of initiatives to improve the benefits and operation of the scheme for both members and participating employers.

Protect is governed by a legally enforceable Trust Deed. The Protect Board of Directors is nominated by the ETU Victorian Branch and the National Electrical and Communications Association, Victorian Chapter.

The Protect Board meets regularly to review operations, consider specialist advice provided by investment, legal and audit professionals and to oversight a responsible and balanced approach to both investment and the future direction of the scheme.

Dean Mighell
Protect Board Chair and
ETU Victorian Branch Secretary


Dean Mighell was an A Grade electrician, ETU Shop Steward and OHS Representative when he became a full-time ETU organiser in September 1988.

Dean was elected State Secretary of the ETU Victorian Branch in 1995. He is a passionate campaigner for workers' entitlements and lead the charge to create an independent and strong severance scheme in 1998, leading to the ultimate formation of Protect.

Appointed Chair of Protect by the ETU Victorian Branch, Dean pioneered the establishment of Australia's best income protection and personal injury and illness insurance for electrical workers; administered by Protect.

He is a former President of the Victorian Trades Hall Council and is currently National President of the Communications Electrical Plumbing Union, Electrical Division.

Howard Worthing
ETU Industrial Officer

Howard is currently an Industrial Officer for the Electrical Trade Union (ETU) and was appointed to the Board of ElecNet in 2005. He has also held positions as a Director on the Connect Superannuation Fund, 370 degrees Group (formerly Victec Ltd), Electrical and Electronic Industry Training Ltd (EEIT) and is a current Board member of the Electrotechnology, Printing, Information, Technology and Communications Industry Training Board (EPIC) and joint was chairperson of EPIC from 2009 to 2011.
Michael Anderson
Associate Director

Michael Anderson was appointed as an Independent Director to the Board of ElecNet in September 2010.

He is a member of the Finance and Investment and Remuneration committees of the Board. Michael’s background is in finance and investment management and he has held Chief Executive and senior executive positions at National Australia Bank, Victorian Funds Management Corporation and Transport Accident Commission among others.

Currently he advises a number of organizations on investment related matters. Michael holds a Bachelor of Business (Distinction) degree from RMIT and is a member of the CPA Australia.

Peter Smith
NECA Representative

Peter has had forty years experience in the Building and Construction Specialist Subcontracting Industry in the areas of electrical and fire protection services. His experience has ranged from construction site to General management roles, he has had responsibility for a business with sales in excess of $140 million and 400 staff. Peter is a Director of United Super and ElecNet.
Philip Green
NECA Victoria Chief Executive Officer

Philip has been Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Chapter of NECA (National Electrical and Communications Association) since 1998. Prior to this he was Industrial Relations Manager for the NSW Chapter of NECA for 11 years. Philip is also a director of ElecNet (Aust) Pty Ltd, Severance Fund Trustee trading as Protect and of 370 degrees group Ltd.
Troy Gray
ETU Assistant Secretary

After completing an electrical apprenticeship, Troy spent over ten years working for a variety of large electrical companies providing electrical services to refineries, smelters and building sites. He became a Shop Steward for several years where he assisted in EBA negotiations. In 2000 he became a full time union official for the ETU and worked across a variety of industries including petro chem, power, aviation, automotive, with the current focus being the building and construction industry. Most recently, he has been appointed Assistant Secretary to the Victorian Branch of the ETU.
Alex McCallum
CEO and Company Secretary

Appointed October 2009

Alex has extensive experience in the industry. He is currently a Director of the Electrical Industry Training Foundation and was previously the Business Director for the ETU Victorian Branch.

He has also served as Director on the boards of Connect Superannuation (now merged with Cbus) and the VICTEC Group Apprenticeship Scheme, and as Chairperson of the EPIC Industry Training Board.
