Register with payroll

Metro Trains Melbourne

Income protection is an optional benefit for Protect Rail members and is a salary sacrifice arrangement between the member and the employer. 

You need to register for income protection with your payroll department. You will be asked to choose the level of cover that you wish to salary sacrifice. Levels of cover are distinguished by:

  1. Waiting periods - you can select from 14 to 60 days
  2. Salary coverage - from $850 to $2,200 per week.

Income protection is an optional benefit for Protect Rail members and is a salary sacrifice arrangement between the member and the employer. 

You need to register for income protection with your payroll department. You will be asked to choose the level of cover that you wish to salary sacrifice. Levels of cover are distinguished by:

  1. Waiting periods - you can select from 14 to 60 days
  2. Salary coverage - from $1,500 to $1,800 per week.

If you wish to change your level of cover, or close your account,  you must advise your employer. We cannot make those changes for you as your insurance cover is an agreement between you and your employer.

Once you have let your employer know, they will make the appropriate change on their Protect account of which you are a member.

Contributions can be tracked via the 'contributions' tab on either the App or workers portal. 

Register for our online services using the 'new to Protect' link on the App or 'register for online access' at the workers portal. If you have any difficulty, please contact the Member Services Team on 1300 344 249 to assist setting your password. 

Once you have registered and generated a password, you can view your account by logging in to the Protect workers portal using the yellow 'workers login' button on the top of each page of this website.

Alternatively, download the Protect App and log in using the same password.

Copies of Protect Injury and Sickness Wording and Product Disclosure Statements (PDS) can be requested from ATC Insurance Solutions.

Accidental dental injury that occurs outside of work

Members with Protect's income protection insurance cover, and their dependent family members, are covered for accidental dental injuries that occur outside of work however, cover is not provided for normal maintenance of dental health. Up to four claims per family are permitted each year.

What happens if I suffer a dental injury at work?

Workers compensation provides protection for work-related injuries.

Additional benefits

Protect Extra Cover provides additional insurance benefits exclusive to financial members of the union policy holder.

These benefits may include:

  • extended cover
  • family ambulance cover
  • increased funeral expenses
  • emergency home help
  • domestic assistance 
  • chauffeur plan

Union members should check their policy brochure to see if any of these benefits apply.

There are a couple of ways to access that information:

  1. The quickest and easiest way to view the premiums your employer is paying on your behalf is to access your account online - either via the workers portal or via the Protect App
  2. Your employer will also have access to the premiums they are paying on your behalf.

Members that contribute to insurance premiums should speak to an accountant or financial advisor regarding claiming payments, as we are not permitted to provide financial advice.

Firefighters should note, that as their income protection allowance is reimbursed it is not tax deductible.

Counselling is provided by trained professionals and is offered over the phone, online or through face-to-face sessions (dependent on any COVID restrictions at the time). Male and female counsellors are available and this free, confidential service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, accessible Australia-wide.

Face-to-face sessions can be arranged near you. Protect Counselling has access to more than 170 qualified professionals throughout Australia, including regional centres.

No referral required

You do not need a referral to access Protect counselling. There is no wait time and every call is answered by a professional counsellor.
